Lightweight timber design meets acoustic performance

The project

The Bank of China project was designed in collaboration with Cachet Group to achieve a striking timber-look ceiling that combined elegance with functionality. The objective was to deliver exceptional acoustic performance for the foyer and boardroom, spaces frequently used for events and gatherings where clear sound quality is essential.

The ceiling is covered with evenly spaced acoustic timber beams, with integrated linear lighting running across them above a wall‑mounted screen displaying a sunset scene.

The solution

Cachet initially sought a real timber ceiling but opted for a more lightweight, practical solution.

Autex Acoustics® delivered an alternative using Frontier™, Beam 100 in Queensland Walnut, featuring a realistic timber grain finish. This lightweight solution replicated the look of timber without requiring structural reinforcement, while offering quick lead times and straightforward installation. The Queensland Walnut colour perfectly complemented existing timber elements, creating a seamless and sophisticated aesthetic.

In addition, using real timber would have introduced another hard, reflective surface into the space, creating further acoustic challenges in an environment designed for large crowds and frequent events, where good acoustics are essential to the overall experience.

The result

The acoustic treatment delivered significant benefits, reducing reverberation and creating a balanced environment for communication and entertainment. Autex Acoustics added further value by providing bespoke layouts, staggering joins every three beams to avoid continuous lines and maintaining a refined look, demonstrating how acoustic solutions can meet both performance and design expectations in high-profile spaces.
